As reported in the Chicago Sun-Times, February 3, 2010 ...

In the article, "Diagnosis Dilemma," in the Sun-Times' Mind & Body section, menopausal women are reminded there has been a dramatic shift in thinking about the safety of hormone replacement therapy. According to the article, "legions" of post-menopausal women spent the 90's on hormone replacement therapy, largely because the hormones were thought to have a protective effect on the heart. In 2002, researchers discovered the opposite was true.

A cardiologist at Rush University Medical Center, and Board President of the American Heart Association Metropolitan Chicago, Dr. Annabelle Volgman, claims, "hormone replacement therapy actually increased heart attack and stroke, as well as life-threatening blood clots and breast cancer. . . After we stopped giving HRT, there were 17,000 fewer heart attacks among women the following year."
